Sam & Max Live!
In response to a rabid fan-base's outcry over the recent cancellation by LucasArts of a Sam & Max: Freelance Police, Sam & Max creator Steve Purcell has commissioned the creation of a series of episodic Sam & Max adventure games!
Sam & Max: Freelance Police is an ultra-hip pop-culture comic book about a dog (Sam) and a rabbit (Max). As overzealous vigilante private investigators they protect Our World (carnivals, Stuckey's, the moon) from Evil[tm] (rodents, insects, people with bad manners). Besides comics, Sam and Max also have their own computer game. If you've ever eaten orange circus peanuts, or salvaged a space food stick as a bludgeoning weapon, then you'll probably like Sam & Max. Heck, you'll probably like them even if you haven't.The games will be created by reletively unknown developer, Telltale Games.
Upon further investigation (read: surfing), the people who were working on Freelance Police for LucasArts were huge Purcell fans. After LucasArts said they would not be laying of the team who developed the ill-fated game, they then proceeded to lay off the team. Not content with letting the property die, the team bided their time by creating Telltale Games and working on another comicbook adaptation, Jeff Smith's Bone (free demo available). However, the team's true intentions have recently come to light as they have yet again announced their collaboration with Steve Purcell now that LucasArts' rights to option the Sam & Max IP have expired. Curiously, LucasArts has removed all evidence that Freelance Police ever existed from their site, including the press releases indicating the game's development and eventual cancellation.
According to Telltale's website:
Telltale will work in close collaboration with Steve on the Sam & Max releases. Sam & Max are very near and dear to Steve, so he will be very involved in the projects. Although he has a “real” job Steve feels a deep moral obligation to see to it that only the highest quality Sam & Max crap be dispersed into society in an effort to confuse and alarm our most impressionable young citizens.Read the rest of the looney FAQ on Telltale's Sam & Max website and keep holding that candle.
